Convict Lake Restroom Rehabilitation Project The Convict Lake Restroom project is a cooperative effort by the four Rotary Clubs in the Eastern Sierra: Mammoth Noon, Mammoth Sunrise, Bishop Noon, and Bishop Sunrise.
Terry Smutney of the
Mammoth Sunrise Rotary Club is the coordinator of the effort. Pat Felt
and Mark Deeds represent the Mammoth Noon Rotary Club. Pat is the current
Community Service Chair, Mark is the incoming Chair. The Bishop Sunrise is
represented by Lynn Coons at

The attached
drawing shows the area around the
restroom and the connecting paved walkway between the restroom, the parking
lot, and the fishing pier. The pier was built last summer.
Work is starting with
an architect to draw up the existing restroom facility and then analyze it
to see if there is enough room to convert the bathrooms to handicap
accessible. It was suggested by Dave Laverty of Triad Engineering, and
Rotarian, that we might also look at installing a new temporary handicap
accessible restroom similar to one installed recently at June Lake.
Terry is organizing a
4-club gathering to be held at Convict Lake soon. He plans to have wheel
chairs we can all take turns using to see the current difficulty in
traversing the path between the fishing pier and the restroom and parking
lot. The paved walkway has several potholes and pop-ups where roots are
making the pavement uneven. Terry wants to get the work from the architect
before this meeting is held so we can begin identifying the items of work,
what construction materials will be necessary, and finally, who will take on
the various tasks. Obviously, before we begin construction, we will need the
USFS approval of the planned construction.
There is an existing
area opposite the existing restroom facility where a Rotary Club installed
some pavers in the past. That area is in need of weeding and general clean
up. That will be one of the items of work.

Update: The project was dedicated in 2008 and a plaque placed on the restroom in a recent ceremony on August 18, 2010. Here are some pictures from the ceremony:
